You will be paired with an individual receiving our services and establish a friendly visiting schedule that works for you. We ask for 1-hour visits per week, during which time you may engage in conversation and activities such as playing cards, reading, looking through old photographs, painting nails, and whatever else you and your match come to enjoy! Our patients are located at various care facilities or in their homes throughout the Chicagoland Area, so you can be matched with someone near you. We provide in-depth training for new volunteers as well as guidance and support throughout your time as a volunteer. Busy Brains Children's Museum Grant Writing Committee

Are you a savvy internet searcher? Do you enjoy writing with a purpose? Would you like to get "behind the scenes" of the program and exhibit planning at Busy Brains Children's Museum? Volunteers on the grant writing committee will use all available resources to search for appropriate grants for Busy Brains Children's Museum to pursue. Once an ideal grant is identified, the entire committee will work with the Executive Director and any other necessary staff to create an action plan and timeline for that grant. Much of the work for this committee can be done from home, yet occasional meetings may be needed.

Busy Brains Children's Museum Marketing Committee

This committee is responsible for designing all materials to inform the public, donors, etc. of events and happenings with museum, including campaign materials, grand opening materials, and post-grand opening materials. This committee also oversees the quarterly newsletter, Facebook/social media updates, web-site, and print materials. Marketing and design interest is helpful. This group will oversee marketing related to the annual Brain Builder: Mingle at the Mansion as well as other fundraising events. Co-chairs: Jen Meyer/Kathy Goers. Meetings are currently held the 3rd Wednesday of the month in the evening at Galati's in Lake Villa.

Busy Brains Children's Museum Exhibits Committee

The Exhibit Committee is awesome to be on as the members get to be a kid again! Come to our meetings and help to brainstorm ideas for our permanent exhibits. We also work on creating and developing programming for our current and future patrons. We meet monthly on the last Tuesday of the month at Galati's in downtown Lake Villa, IL. Busy Brains Children's Museum Building Committee

Are you good at building, restoring, or repairing? Always ready, willing and able with tools of all shapes and sizes? Looking for a way to give back to the community in a hands-on way? The building committee is just the thing for you. Volunteers on this committee not only help with the planning of the rehab and construction of the Busy Brains Children's Museum Building, they will also assist with much of the physical work that needs to be done. Busy Brains Children's Museum - Fundraising/Events Committee

Do you enjoy event planning? Are you the social butterfly always talking to everyone? Or are you the one that stays behind the scenes to coordinate all the details? Do you have experience with fundraising for a good cause? This committee currently plans an annual spring gala as well as a small family fall event. Volunteers also locate and coordinate many other small fundraisers throughout the year to raise money to open the doors of Lake County's soon-to-be only Children's Museum. We are looking for fun, enthusiastic, detail oriented volunteers ready to help us realize our vision. This group oversees the planning of the annual Brain Builder: Mingle at the Mansion gala in spring as well as the Fall Family Festival in October. This group also oversees the planning of additional fundraising activities, including the One Tile at a Time program. Co-chairs: Erin Donovan/Heidi Alexander. Meetings are currently held the 2nd Tuesday of the month in the evening at Galati's in Lake Villa. As an event gets closer, they may meet more often.

Own-Your-Own Program Manager

Volunteer Bravo Program Manager “Own-Your-Own” Music Instrument Program Bravo Waukegan is a non-profit organization located in Lake Forest, serving the public school district of Waukegan. Bravo’s mission is to support music education in Waukegan schools by filling the gaps due to tight budgets, and under funded and under staffed music education programming. The gaps are filled by collecting donated musical instruments and delivering them to the District; supporting in-school and after-school music lessons and clubs; offering a summer music instruction camp for any interested elementary and middle school student; and much more. Bravo’s support is directly aligned with the needs of the Waukegan school music program. We are currently seeking a volunteer Program Manger to join our team. The Program Manager implements an established and successful program, “Own-Your-Own.” This program provides Waukegan public school music students an affordable option to purchase instruments. It halts the cycle of renting from the District or music store. Time required to accomplish the goals is flexible, as some months are busier than others and would average 20 hours a month. This individual may work remotely, but will require limited office time. In this role you will: Implement an established and successful instrument purchase and fulfillment program. The program flows in steps: Orders are received and processed Contact vendor, order instrument Forward payment to bookkeeper Follow up on delivery, contact family and arrange pick-up. Update the Excel spreadsheet after the billing statement from vendor arrives, reconcile the statement, and process it for payment. JourneyCare's Care Companion volunteers support hospice patients and families in their home, which may be a private residence or senior living community. A Care Companion is simply a friend who visits (on a routine or occasional basis) with someone receiving hospice care. The provide companionship, emotional support, and, above all, offer a presence, an ear to listen to stories and an understanding smile. You do not provide hands on medical care--you're just a friend because often our patients can feel lonely and isolated! Care Companions also provide respite support so tired, stressed caregivers can take a much-needed break. JourneyCare supports pediatric patients as well and also needs volunteers who can support those families, perhaps by spending time with the patient's siblings. JourneyCare's service area includes 10 counties and we are in great need of volunteers in the Round Lake area. Please join us at one of our monthly volunteer orientations to learn more!

This year’s Northern California wildfires burned more than 600,000 acres – the largest wildfire in California history. The fires were devastating, resulting in the destruction of numerous structures, the displacement of thousands of residents, and several fatalities. While first responders met the wildfires head-on, volunteers also played an important role, providing comfort and counsel for those at risk of losing everything. CSAA Insurance Group’s award-winning corporate volunteer program, AAA Volunteers, empowers and motivates employees to address diverse community needs through volunteer service. In response to the wildfires, employees volunteered to take time from their normal job duties and daily routines to contact impacted customers.

Lucretia Doyle is living proof that society’s expectations of you should never dictate what you choose to become. The daughter of a formerly incarcerated mother, Lucretia overcame the obstacles she faced at a young age and became passionate about empowering youth with the knowledge that they are capable of doing extraordinary things despite their backgrounds. She currently serves as senior program manager for recognition at Points of Light, overseeing the administration of the Presidential Volunteer Service Awards, a national volunteer recognition program that encourages citizens to live a life of service. Lucretia’s passion for youth empowerment led her to create the Patricia A. Doyle Foundation, in memory of her mother, to provide book scholarships and care packages to students who have a current or formally incarcerated parent.

Couple Creates School in Tanzania to Provide Educational Opportunities to Children with Disabilities

Joann and Don Tolmie first visited Tanzania in 1999 as guests of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. They soon realized there was a vast educational inequality for children with disabilities – who are often believed to be a bad omen or a hardship, and for whom educational opportunities are few. After discovering the need for disabled children to have a proper place to learn and grow, the husband and wife duo teamed up with the Northern Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania to create the Faraja Primary School. There’s no denying that this first trip ignited a spark in their hearts that was so big, it would grow to help create a culture shift in understanding disability.
